A good stop is the most important thing your herding dog will ever learn. It's also the most common problem in the herding world.
Let's fix yours.
Let's talk about stopping your dog.
How can something that seems so simple, be such a challenge for most beginners?
Lots of courses teach a lie down, but they don't explain how to make that lie down work in real life.
They also don't tell you what to do when you run into trouble. When your stop starts looking like a change of pace, or doesn't seem to have any effect at all.
I'll help you understand why your dog isn't stopping, and will give you tips and show you exercises to bring you both back on the same page.
What poor stops lead to:
Slicing flanks
Bad outruns
Lack of pace
It almost always comes back to whether your dog has a good stop or not.
WOULD IT MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER IF I SAID YOU'RE NOT ALONE?
If you've ever been to a herding clinic it doesn't matter how advanced it's supposed to be, almost everyone winds up going back to working on their stop.
In our rush to move to wide open spaces, send our dogs on bigger outruns, or start driving, we tend to let our stops slide and develop bad habits. It's not just about getting a dog to lie down, it's about how they lie down.
Your dog might not be stopping well because:
- you aren't stopping them enough, because you know their stop isn't perfect and you don't want to fight that battle today while you work on other skills.
- you're stopping them too often because everything is happening too quick and you need time to think.
- you've seen some methods used to get a better stop, but you're worried that you'll turn your dog off
You can teach a good stop and still have a good time with your dog
Your Instructor
I've spent over 35 years helping people with their dogs, both on and off the trial field.
I'm a professional dog trainer first and foremost. I love solving problems and helping people find success in the partnerships they have with their dogs.
I realised that while we as instructors tell you that your dog needs a good stop, we assume that you understand why it's important, and how to avoid the MANY traps along the way to a fully trained dog that can frustrate both you and your dog, and slow your progress down.
That's why I built this course. So that we can dive deep into what a good stop is, why you need one, and how help your dog develop a good stop of their own.
I'm looking forward to working with you.
